AMBIENT WORLDS

ROMAN SCHÖNDORFER

Roman Schöndorfer, born in Vienna in 1963, media researcher for advertising and visual media creates in his work a unique aesthetic charismatic power, and can thus develop so-called "Ambient Worlds".

For his photography Schoendorfer goes to research. He searches for places, have the history, courts remain hidden from the public, hidden places. Dilapidated castles, manor houses, abandoned children's homes, enchanted haunted houses and destroyed by natural disasters buildings he has already visited. However, the properties in Italy are among his favorite motifs. Emotions and thrills are an important part of his work, which is always a lot of research based.
The preliminary work begins with references to interesting places, previews from the Street View perspective or photo-sharing communities are the first steps to develop the pictures. With details on the area and the scheduled object, Roman Schoendorfer starts his work sometimes with complete plans arise before the artist was actually there. He can then move freely within the site and devote himself entirely to work with the camera through its structured preparation.

The starting point for his work is the photograph as a snapshot, which then is passed through a graphical process into a kind of painting. As a restorer, who scratches on an old wall and behind it exposes valuable frescoes, approaches Schoendorfer within his photographs. Colors, textures, aging - time leaves its traces and from the whole arises in conjunction with advanced image processing a new beauty - a new aesthetic. Renaissance painting plays an important role. Schoendorfers goal is to revive the character of oil paintings in his photographs again and understand the glazes with its Photoshop brushes. He works his way forward layer by layer. In this way, he tried to use the photograph, the way to go back to painting.
Thus, the images are not intended for the rapid superficial viewing. You need concentration. When viewing longer always possible to uncover new details. This is done by the unconventional lighting director. The light leads into the picture, one begins to orient themselves in it, as in a movie or in a dream sequence and the eyes are on their way to follow the beam of light. But the game with the sharpness supports the picturesque properties in Schoendorfers Photography. Contrasts of light and shadow play with the human perception of sharpness and blur. So there is in his paintings sometimes different sharpness levels playing with the usual visual experiences.
